Speaking versus Writing

THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE Spoken WORD. OR IS IT?

The purpose of all language is to communicate - that is, to move thoughts or information from one person to another person.
There are always at least two people in any communication. To communicate, one person must put something "out" and another person must take something "in". We call this "output" (>>>) and "input" (<<<).
- I speak to you (OUTPUT: my thoughts go OUT of my head).
- You listen to me (INPUT: my thoughts go INto your head).
- You write to me (OUTPUT: your thoughts go OUT of your head).
- I read your words (INPUT: your thoughts go INto my head).

So language consists of four "skills": two for output (speaking and writing); and two for input (listening and reading. We can say this another way - two of the skills are for "spoken" communication and two of the skills are for "written" communication:
Spoken:
>>> Speaking - mouth
<<< Listening - ear
Written:
>>> Writing - hand
<<< Reading - eye
What are the differences between Spoken and Written English? Are there advantages and disadvantages for each form of communication?

Status

When we learn our own (native) language, learning to speak comes before learning to write. In fact, we learn to speak almost automatically. It is natural. But somebody must teach us to write. It is not natural. In one sense, speaking is the "real" language and writing is only a representation of speaking. However, for centuries, people have regarded writing as superior to speaking. It has a higher "status". This is perhaps because in the past almost everybody could speak but only a few people could write. But as we shall see, modern influences are changing the relative status of speaking and writing.

Differences in Structure and Style

We usually write with correct grammar and in a structured way. We organize what we write into sentences and paragraphs. We do not usually use contractions in writing (though if we want to appear very friendly, then we do sometimes use contractions in writing because this is more like speaking.) We use more formal vocabulary in writing (for example, we might write "the car exploded" but say "the car blew up") and we do not usually use slang. In writing, we must use punctuation marks like commas and question marks (as a symbolic way of representing things like pauses or tone of voice in speaking).
We usually speak in a much less formal, less structured way. We do not always use full sentences and correct grammar. The vocabulary that we use is more familiar and may include slang. We usually speak in a spontaneous way, without preparation, so we have to make up what we say as we go. This means that we often repeat ourselves or go off the subject. However, when we speak, other aspects are present that are not present in writing, such as facial expression or tone of voice. This means that we can communicate at several levels, not only with words.

Durability

One important difference between speaking and writing is that writing is usually more durable or permanent. When we speak, our words live for a few moments. When we write, our words may live for years or even centuries. This is why writing is usually used to provide a record of events, for example a business agreement or transaction.

Speaker & Listener / Writer & Reader

When we speak, we usually need to be in the same place and time as the other person. Despite this restriction, speaking does have the advantage that the speaker receives instant feedback from the listener. The speaker can probably see immediately if the listener is bored or does not understand something, and can then modify what he or she is saying.
When we write, our words are usually read by another person in a different place and at a different time. Indeed, they can be read by many other people, anywhere and at any time. And the people reading our words, can do so at their leisure, slowly or fast. They can re-read what we write, too. But the writer cannot receive immediate feedback and cannot (easily) change what has been written.

How Speaking and Writing Influence Each Other

In the past, only a small number of people could write, but almost everybody could speak. Because their words were not widely recorded, there were many variations in the way they spoke, with different vocabulary and dialects in different regions. Today, almost everybody can speak and write. Because writing is recorded and more permanent, this has influenced the way that people speak, so that many regional dialects and words have disappeared. (It may seem that there are already too many differences that have to be learned, but without writing there would be far more differences, even between, for example, British and American English.) So writing has had an important influence on speaking. But speaking can also influence writing. For example, most new words enter a language through speaking. Some of them do not live long. If you begin to see these words in writing it usually means that they have become "real words" within the language and have a certain amount of permanence.

Influence of New Technology

Modern inventions such as sound recording, telephone, radio, television, fax or email have made or are making an important impact on both speaking and writing. To some extent, the divisions between speaking and writing are becoming blurred. Emails are often written in a much less formal way than is usual in writing. With voice recording, for example, it has for a long time been possible to speak to somebody who is not in the same place or time as you (even though this is a one-way communication: we can speak or listen, but not interact). With the telephone and radiotelephone, however, it became possible for two people to carry on a conversation while not being in the same place. Today, the distinctions are increasingly vague, so that we may have, for example, a live television broadcast with a mixture of recordings, telephone calls, incoming faxes and emails and so on. One effect of this new technology and the modern universality of writing has been to raise the status of speaking. Politicians who cannot organize their thoughts and speak well on television win very few votes.

English Checker

- aspect: a particular part or feature of something
- dialect: a form of a language used in a specific region
- formal: following a set of rules; structured; official
- status: level or rank in a society
- spontaneous: not planned; unprepared
- structured: organized; systematic
Note: instead of "spoken", some people say "oral" (relating to the mouth) or "aural" (relating to the ear).

How to Hear English Everywhere

Two simple definitions
  • to hear: to receive sound with the ears
  • to listen: to try to hear
YOU are very good at languages! You must be because you already speak one language very well - your own! And if you can learn and speak one language well, then you can certainly learn and speak one or more other languages.
But did you ever ask yourself: "How did I learn my own language?" In fact, you never really "learned" it at all - you just started speaking it. One day, when you were about two or three years old, you started speaking your language. A few words at first, not full sentences. But you spoke. And very soon you made progress without even thinking about it. It was like magic!
But it wasn't magic. It was the result of hearing. For two to three years before you spoke, you heard people speaking your language all day, and maybe all night. You heard people speaking your language. Maybe you listened to people, but more importantly you heard. them. Then, as if by magic, you started to speak. All that hearing was necessary for you to start speaking. For two to three years words went IN to your head. Then words came OUT of your head! That is why hearing (and listening to) English as much as possible is so important to you now. The more English you put in, the more you'll get out!
So how can you hear a lot of English when you're not in an English-speaking country or family? Fortunately, there are many ways of hearing English in almost all countries of the world.

Radio

You can receive English language radio in most countries. Two of the best international networks are the BBC World Service and Voice of America. Both of them have special programmes for learners of English. You can find information about times and frequencies for your country on their web sites.

Television

TV is an excellent resource for hearing and listening to English. The pictures help you understand what is being said. If you don't have access to English-language TV, you may be able to watch TV on Internet.

Internet

It is now a lot easier to hear English by Internet. If you're reading this at your computer, you can probably listen to some English-language radio news right now, without even moving! To be able to listen to radio on the Internet, you'll need to have special software called a "player" installed in your computer. Most sites work with two players - the RealPlayer from RealNetworks and the Windows Media Player from Microsoft. Don't worry. Both these players are free and you may already have them installed on your computer.

Music/songs

Songs in English are everywhere, even on foreign-language radio and TV stations. Listen to them often. Buy some cassettes or CDs, or make recordings, and try to write the words for an entire song. But choose one that is not too difficult. That means it should be reasonably slow, and with real words sung clearly. Some pop songs are very unclear and are difficult even for native English-speakers to understand fully!

Cinema

Outside the English-speaking world, many large cities have cinemas that show films in English, usually with sub-titles. Make it a habit to go to these films. If you need to read the sub-titles, at least you'll be hearing English even if you don't understand it.

Video

Video has one really great advantage. You can play it again . . . and again. You can use video to watch film cassettes that you buy or borrow. If there are sub-titles, you can cover them with paper (which you can remove if you really don't understand after listening several times). And you can use video to record programmes from television and then watch them several times to improve your understanding.

Friends

Try to make friends with English-speaking people so that you can practise your English through conversation. Of course, this will practise your speaking as well as your listening. And if you don't have a lot of time to go out and meet people, at least you can chat a little by telephone.
Finally, don't worry if you don't understand everything you hear. Hearing comes first! Understanding comes next!

Listening: A good way to learn English

Everyone knows that there are four skills in learning a language, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. They are always related in terms of usage, and speaking is viewed by learners as the most desirable skill in face-to-face communication in the globalization era. However, what is the answer to the following questions?
  • What do you have to do before you can speak?
  • What does a child learn before he talks?
  • What do we do before chatting?
Listen, of course!
Naturally, children begin listening to their parents when they are babies. They are often greeted, spoken to and admired without any response expected. Though nobody knows if the baby understands the spoken words, the process continues. Children automatically acquire such language over some time, and later on gradually produce it through actual experience. The production may be incomplete at first, but successful at last. That leads to speaking skill which is quite applicable to daily conversation.
In learning English, listening can help improve speaking considerably. Although it is the first of all skills, it is neither the easiest nor the most meaningless. We need to hear various types of English repeatedly and continuously if we want to communicate properly, meaningfully and naturally.

Why is listening good?

  1. When listening, we are reviewing a lot of English usage such as vocabulary, grammatical structures, intonation, accent and our own interpretation.
  2. We can learn new words and expressions by hearing them frequently.
  3. Besides the English revision, general knowledge from news, features, or even advertising spots is certainly beneficial for regular listeners.
  4. We can imitate what we hear and apply it with great confidence.
  5. Listening can be a good "hobby" while we do other things such as cooking, ironing, exercising, relaxing etc. In other words, we have no wasted time at all.
  6. Listening is also a great way to train our attention.

How can we listen to English?

Nowadays, radio cassette recorders are household appliances, but we often overlook their radio function. We can experience English language radio programmes almost anywhere in the world. They are usually picked up on FM bands and aired particularly for foreigners. Short wave radio programmes are another option. Two of the most easily found English language broadcasters are the BBC and Voice of America. Today, you can even access them by internet. You'll find some useful links for listening to the radio by internet, including "News in Easy English", here.

Subject and Object Pronouns ( Kata Ganti Subyek dan Obyek )

Istilah Subjek dalam kalimat aktif adalah orang atau sesuatu yang menjadi pelaku dari sebuah pekerjaan atau kegiatan. Contohnya :
- I eat rice. ( Saya makan nasi )
- We study English. ( Kami belajar Bahasa Inggris )
 Dalam kalimat-kalimat tersebut yang menjadi subjek adalah I dan We. I dan We adalah yang melakukan pekerjaan, dalam hal ini eat (makan) dan study (belajar).

Sedangkan Obyek adalah apa yang dipengaruhi oleh perbuatan subjek
Sebagai contoh:
- I eat rice. ( Saya makan nasi )
- We study English. ( Kami belajar Bahasa Inggris )
Dalam hal ini rice dan English merupakan obyek. Rice merupakan apa yang saya makan (what I eat) dan English merupakan apa yang kami pelajari (what we study).

Kata Ganti Subyek dan Obyek ( Subject and Object Pronoun ) digunakan sebagai pengganti kata benda, biasanya dikarenakan kita sudah mengetahui benda yang dimaksud, atau sudah disebutkan dalam kalimat sebelumnya.
Contohnya :
- The students are in the library. They are reading books.
  (Siswa-siswa berada di perpustakaan. Mereka sedang membaca buku)
- I like this book. I read it every day. (Saya suka buku ini. Saya membacanya setiap hari)
Kata They adalah Subject Pronoun pengganti kata The Students dan kata It adalah Object Pronoun pengganti kata the book.

Adapun Subject dan Object Pronouns dapat dilihat pada table berikut :

Subject
Object
Singular – Tunggal
I
You
He
She
It

Plural – Jamak
We
You
They
Singular – Tunggal

Passive Voice – Kalimat Pasif

Ada dua bentuk kalimat dalam Bahasa Inggris, yaitu aktif (active) dan pasif (Passive).
Kalimat Aktif  memberitahu kepada kita apa yang dilakukan oleh subjek, contohnya:
- The secretary write a letter.  (Sekretaris menulis surat.)
Sedangkan Kalimat Passive memberitahu kita apa yang dilakukan oleh obyek terhadap subjek.
Contohnya :
- The letter was written by the secretary. (Surat itu ditulis oleh sekretaris )

Bentuk

The passive is made with the verb "to be" and the past participle. Kalimat pasif dibuat dengan menggunakan “to be” dan “Past Participle” (kata kerja bentuk III).

Berikut adalah beberapa tenses yang digunakan dalam bentuk pasif.
Tense

Simple present:

Present continuous:

Future:

By

Untuk menyatakan apa penyebab tindakan pasif, Anda dapat menggunakan kata “by”. Contohnya:
- This photo was taken by my friend . – (Foto ini diambil oleh teman saya. )
- I was given this by my brother . – (Aku diberi ini oleh adik saya.)

Seringkali  kita tidak perlu menyebutkan/menyatakan penyebab tindakan pasif, terutama jikasudah  jelas dipahami atau tidak relevan.
Sebagai contoh:
- The meeting was cancelled. - Pertemuan itu dibatalkan.
Dalam hal ini Pembatalan pertemuan tersebut adalah hal yang terpenting, bukan apa yang membatalkannya, sehingga penggunaan kata “by” tidaklah perlu. Dengan kata lain penyebab dari pembatalan pertemuan tersebut merupakan suatu hal yang tidak perlu diungkapkan.
Contoh lain :
- These boots were made in Italy. – Sepatu-sepatu bot ini dibuat di Italia.
(Kenyataan sepatu-sepatu itu dibuat di Italia merupakan hal yang penting, bukan siapa yang membuat mereka.)

Born

Ketika berbicara tentang suatu kelahiran, maka kita selalu menggunakan bentuk pasif "to be born".
Sebagai contoh:
- I was born in Iran. - Saya lahir di Iran.
- The twins were born just last year. - Si kembar yang lahir setahun lalu.

Get

Get can be used instead of to be in situations where something happens. Kata “get” bisa digunakan sebagai pengganti “to be” dalam situasi di mana sesuatu terjadi.
Sebagai contoh:
- Our flight got cancelled = Our flight was cancelled. (Penerbangan kami dibatalkan )
- I got paid today = I was paid today. (Saya dibayar hari ini)

Kata “get” tidak dapat digunakan dalam situasi umum dan kata kerja pernyataan (kata kerja yang mengungkapkan pernyataan, bukan tindakan) misalnya :
- He is liked by a lot of people. (Benar)
- He gets liked by a lot of people. (Salah)
- She is known to be a hard-working employee. (Benar)
- She gets known to be a hard-working employee. (Salah)

Kata “Get” lebih sering digunakan dalam bahasa Inggris informal.

COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUN

1. Kata benda yang dapat dihitung (countable nouns)
Semua kata benda dapat dihitung atau tidak dapat dihitung. Kata benda yang dapat dihitung memiliki sifat-sifat berikut:
  • Dapat dihitung secara langsung, misalnya 1 apel, 2 apel, dll.
  • Dapat dibuat jamak
  • Dapat ditambahkan artikel a atau an.
2. Kata benda yang tidak dapat dihitung (uncountable nouns)
Kata benda yang tidak dapat dihitung memiliki sifat-sifat berikut:
  • Biasanya tidak bisa dihitung secara langsung misalnya, 1 uang, 2 uang, ..dll.
  • Biasanya tidak bisa dibuat jamak
  • Biasanya tidak ditambahkan artikel a atau an
Kata some sering digunakan untuk kata benda jamak. Misalnya:
  • I have some apples
  • I have some food
Ini akan dibahas lebih rinci pada pembahasan selanjutnya.
Berikut beberapa kata benda yang dapat dihitung dan tidak dapat dihitung.
Countable
apple = apel
tree = pohon
person = orang
dog = anjing
kilo = kilo
liter = liter
Uncountable
time = waktu
rice = nasi
beef = daging
money = uang
information = informasi
help = bantuan

Kata benda yang dapat dihitung menunjuk pada sesuatu yang sifatnya sendiri dan memiliki wujud fisik. Misalnya, a person (seseorang), a kilo (sekilo).

Misalnya:
  • Dapat dihitung: A glass of milk (segelas susu). Disini glass menunjuk pada satu wadah yang terbuat dari kaca.
  • Tidak dapat dihitung: You can see through glass (Kamu bisa melihat lewat kaca). Disini glass/kaca tidak menunjuk pada sesuatu yang tunggal, tetapi menunjuk pada kaca sebagai sebuah zat.
  • Dapat dihitung: He has many papers (dia punya banyak kertas). Disini paper menunjuk pada beberapa dokumen yang sifatnya individual.
  • Tidak dapat dihitung: Paper is made from wood (kertas terbuat dari kayu).

1) I have a brother and two sisters. I love my family. (Benar)
I have brother and two sisters. I love my a family. (Tidak benar)
2) She has a cheese sandwich, an apple, and some milk for lunch. (Benar)
She has some cheese sandwich, a apple, and a milk for lunch. (Tidak benar)
3) My house is in London. It has a living-room and two bedrooms. In the morning I study English, and in the afternoon I work in a store. (Benar)
My house is in a London. (Tidak benar)
In the morning I study an English, and in the afternoon I work in store. (Tidak benar)

Kosa kata baru:
love = cinta
cheese = keju
sandwich = lapis
apple = apel
milk = susu
lunch = makan siang
house = rumah
in = di
London = London
living room = ruang tamu
bedroom = kamar tidur
morning = pagi
afternoon = sore
store = store

CONCRETE AND ABSTRACT NOUN (Kata Benda Kongkrit dan Abstrak)

Noun (Kata benda)  adalah semua kata yang menunjukkan benda, baik itu benda hidup maupun benda mati.
Secara garis besarnya, Noun mempunyai 2 bentuk, yaitu :
1.  Concrete Noun (Kata benda berwujud) yaitu yang dapat dilihat dan diraba.
     Contoh :  gold, table, man, water, Jakarta, etc.
2.  Abstract Noun (Kata benda tak berwujud), yakni yang tidak dapat dilihat dan diraba, tapi dapat dibayangkan.
     Contoh: Wisdom (kebijaksanaan), happiness (kebahagiaan), health (kesehatan), friendship (persahabatan), etc.

Ada 4 jenis Concrete Noun, yaitu:
  • Proper Noun (Kata Benda yang merupakan nama diri). Proper Noun senantiasa didahului oleh huruf kapital, mis. nama orang, kota, negara, sekolah, dll.
  • Contoh: Lisa, Jakarta, Tokyo, Airlangga University, etc.
  • Common Noun (Kata Benda Umum)
  • Contoh: teacher, book, plane, mountain, table, etc.
  • Material Noun (Kata Benda yang terdiri dari Bahan Mentah / Bahan Baku)
  • contoh: gold, paint, silver, oil, etc.
  • Collective Noun (Kata Benda Kolektif, yaitu kata benda yang mempunyai arti majemuk)
  • Contoh: flock (sekawanan hewan), division (sekumpulan serdadu), class (sekumpulan murid), fleet (sekumpulan kapal perang), committee (panitia), group (kelompok orang), etc.

Abstract Noun merupakan bentukan dari kata-kata lain, seperti verb (kata kerja), adjective (kata sifat), dan kata-kata lainnya.

a.  Abstract Noun yang berasal dari Verb (kata kerja)
    Contoh :
    agree = menyetujui > agreement = persetujuan
    argue = berdebat > argument = perdebatan
    connect = menghubungkan > conection = hubungan
    act = berbuat > action = perbuatan
    compete = bersaing > competition = persaingan
    hinder = menghalangi > hindrance = halangan
    assist = membantu > assistance = bantuan
    complain = mengeluh > complaint = keluhan
    discover = menemukan > discovery = penemuan
    hope = mengharapkan > hope = harapan
    help = menolong > help = pertolongan, etc.
b.  Abstract Noun yang berasal dari Adjective (Kata Sifat)
     Contoh :
    safe menjadi safety,
    real menjadi reality,
    happy menjadi happiness,
    important menjadi importance
    beautiful menjadi beauty,
    hungry menjadi hunger,etc.

Inggris menjadi Leather Bag.
 Sepatu Baru menjadi New Shoes
Gadis Cantik menjadi Beautifu Girl.
Di dalam kalimat, kata benda senantiasa berada di posisi Subject atau Object.
Contohnya:
-  Joko drives  a car (Joko mengendarai sebuah mobil).
Dalam kalimat ini dapat dilihat bahwa kata Joko dan a car adalah kata benda, dimana Joko merupakan subject dan a car merupakan object.
Perhatikan pula contoh-contoh lainnya :
Ahmad borrows a book in the library.
The students make a research in the laboratory.
Arman catches a bird
The farmers plant rice in the ricefield.
Dari kalimat-kalimat tersebut dapat dilihat bahwa semua kata yang dicetak tebal merupakan kata benda dan posisinya dalam kalimat sebagai subject dan object.

Demikianlah pembelajaran kita kali ini, dan pada postingan selanjutnya penulis masih akan membahas seputar NOUN dalam materi yang berbeda.
Semoga dapat bermanfaat. Wassalam.
